Khao
Kong Buddhist Park located at Khaogongmongkol Mingmitpatitharam Temple
in Lampoo sub-district is where Phra Phuttha Thaksin Ming Mongkhon is
situated. It is 8 kilometers away from Narathiwat city via Narathiwat
Tanyong road. The area used to be a major landmark for Buddhism as
Buddhist’s ancient items were found here. Today, it has become a monk
residence.
The
highlight is a graceful southern Buddha image, the golden Phra Phuttha
Thaksin Ming Mongkhon, which is seated in the lotus position. The
Rattanakosin statue’s artistic style originates from southern India
during Chola period combining with the style of Nakhon Si Thammarat.
This golden Buddha image seated in the posture of giving the first
sermon with the right hand touching together and left hand opening
up.The reinforced concrete statue, decorated with gold, has a lap width
of 17 meters and a height of 24 meters from the lotus-bud halo to the
lotus base. It is considered a significant symbol representing a
peaceful cooperation between Buddhism and Islam in the south of
Thailand, the most beautiful and largest outdoor Buddha image in the
south. The construction of this Buddha image was between 1966 and 1969.
The King Rama IX had placed the Buddha relics in 1970.
For tourists who interest in visiting this cultural and significant
temple, the park is open every day with no entrance fee.
