Attraction Details :
One of the ancient
temples from Ayutthaya period is Wat Rong Chang. Legend has it that it
was built during the reign of Phraya Kotra Bong. In that time, the area
was known as “Kong Chang” or a gathering place for elephants and
mahouts. Subsequently, the name was distorted into “Klong Chang” (or
Elephant canal). When the local administration opened Prachaban School
here, the place was turned into the temple named “Wat Rong Chang”. As
entering the site, visitors will notice 3 outstandingly huge Buddha
images, which are in “Marn Vichai” posture (Buddha overcoming Mara),
“Ham Yat” posture (Buddha forbidding the relatives), and “Sai Yat”
posture (Reclining Buddha). Walking along, they will see a considerably
interesting component of this temple, a gigantic chedi built in 1974.
The chedi has 108 Tipitaka cabinets for visitors to make merit for the
sake of luck. The building was specially designed to have a secret
underground chamber for storing 84,000 Dhamma Teachings from Buddhist
scriptures (Tipitaka). All of them were written on inscribed bricks for
fear that they could be destroyed and lost from the world, if any
unexpected circumstances like nuclear war occur in the future.
Therefore, the secret chamber here was built as a shelter. Moreover, Wat Rong Chang is not only the religious place for worshipping , it is also a place for a relaxation. The temple provides peaceful atmosphere, pavilions for visitors to leisurely hang out, including many facilities such as restaurants in front of the temple, and car park for the visitors.
For those who are interested to visit Wat Rong Chang, the temple is open every day from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. You can directly contact Tambon Rong Chang, Amphoe Muang, Phichit to ask for further information.
