Located on the campus
of Songkhla Nakharin University in Pattani town, the Kallayaniwatthana
Institute of Arts and Culture is particularly valuable for visitors and
local people interested in the history and culture of southern Thailand.
The Institute, named for Princess Kallayaniwatthana, the elder sister
of King Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII) and King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama
IX), is divided into two sections: the PhraThepyanmoli Museum and the
Khatichon Witthaya Museum.The Phra Thepyanmoli Museum displays the history, activities, and utensils of Phra Thepyanmoli, a revered Buddhist monk of southern Thailand. Phra Thepyanmoli, born in 1897, served as the abbot of important temples and as the leader of the Buddhist Sangha (organization of monks) for both Pattani province and the region. Meanwhile, the Khatichon Witthaya Museum focuses on the daily lives of the ordinary Malay Muslim inhabitants of Pattani. It displays stories, case studies, utensils, and arts of Muslim households in the southern border provinces. Some exhibits go back to pre-historic times and some focus on the history of the ancient town of Yarang, with displays on its pottery, beliefs and technology.
The Kallayaniwatthana Institute of Arts and Culture is open Mondays to Fridays from 9.00 am-11:30 am and 1.00 pm-4.00 pm except for public holidays. Entry is free of charge.
